Romanian National Gets Three Years For Hack Scheme

Mircea-Ilie Ispasoiu was arrested for international hacking plot that involved wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Romanian Mircea-Ilie Ispasoiu, under arrest for an international hacking scheme, has been sentenced to three years in prison and three years of supervised release and given a fine of $907,204.88 by a US court. Ispasoiu had earlier pleaded guilty to the indictment charges after being extradited from Romania.

A US Department of Justice (DoJ) release said Ispasoiu devised a hacking plot from August 2011 to February 2014 involving wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. He hacked retailers, security companies, medical offices, and individuals and appropriated confidential information including credit and debit card data.

Ispasoiu also stole fingerprints of applicants from a security company which was running background checks on them.

For details, read DoJ release.
