10 More Women in Security You May Not Know But Should

The second installment in a series highlighting women who are driving change in cybersecurity but may not be on your radar - yet.

Jamie Tomasello

Senior Manager of Security Operations, Duo Security

Jamie Tomasello is the senior manager of security operations at Duo Security, where she leads teams of information security and trust and compliance analysts responsible for incident response, vulnerability management, security awareness, policy development, risk assessment, and audits.

Prior to her role at Duo, she was technology director at nonprofit Access Now, which protects the digital rights of at-risk users around the world. She has also held roles as the lead of policy and investigations at Cloudflare, principal engineer at Comcast, and investigation manager at a law firm for cybercrime cases related to online pharmacies, phishing, spam, and identity theft.

Tomasello, who considers herself a "policy technologist," has embedded a technical compliance group at Duo that combines policy and security expertise to build an understanding between technical and legal teams. The group brings together technical teams, legal experts, and auditors so they can better understand and fix problems. Tomasello built this synergy by using integrity, empathy, and simplicity to establish trust among internal stakeholders and customers.

These days, she's expanding Duo's security operations team and applying behavior modification principles and procedures to address overt and covert behaviors in cybersecurity. On top of that, she's working toward her degree in psychology.

Tomasello is an advocate of employee wellness and inclusion, and will be presenting a session at this year's Black Hat USA, entitled "Holding on for Tonight: Addiction in Infosec."

"There's no such thing as work-life balance just a healthy or toxic life," she says. "It's important to learn how to set boundaries, establish principles, and hold them."

Tomasello's goals for the future are to continue building leaders, evolve Duo's security posture, and establish new norms for employee wellness and inclusion within the infosec community. Beyond welcoming more women into the industry, she believes we should work on welcoming all underrepresented people into cybersecurity.

"Remember, both in code and in policy, we tend to inscribe our own values and experiences," she says. "If you build a team that is representative of the users and expanded markets you want to serve, they will anticipate and solve for the problems those users and organizations face as well ... use whatever privilege you have to amplify the voices of the underrepresented."

When she's not working on security at Duo, you can find Tomasello on the road: She is currently training for her second ultramarathon and planning to run the Chicago marathon for the first time.

Extroverts?
I have worked with and reported to female coworkers and leaders. The leaders in this article seem to have a common trait of being extroverts, no difference in comparison to their male counterparts. However, a lot of unsung female heros are not extroverts and work diligiently with their team members and customers. They do not want publicity. To me, they are also leaders...
