Dedicated machine no longer required to run free alternative to SonicWALL
SAN MATEO, Calif. -- Untangle, the pioneer in open source network gateway platforms, today announced a fully virtualized version of the Untangle Gateway Platform running on VMware Player or Server -- eliminating the need to commit a dedicated machine to the Gateway Platform.
It all started with an Untangle community forum member who wanted to run Untangle on a Windows laptop for customer demonstrations. The community responded, creating a solution within days. Demand for this solution quickly blossomed, so Untangle packaged the VMware virtual appliance for reuse -- creating detailed documentation and making the software easier to use.
Built around more than 30 best-of-breed, open source network security and monitoring projects – including SpamAssasin, ClamAV, and Snort – the Untangle Gateway Platform is the first commercial-grade open source solution for blocking spam, spyware, viruses, adware and unwanted content on the network providing the convenience, features and stability of the major appliance vendors at a fraction of the cost and hassle.
“It’s awesome to see the Untangle community come up with great ideas and even better to see them provide the solution.” said Dirk Morris, CTO of Untangle. “To make it easier for others, we then packaged the software for VMware Player and Server and documented the instructions. Quick and easy – the way it should be.”
