Restaurant Chains Hit in PoS Attack

Buca di Beppo, Earl of Sandwich, and Planet Hollywood were among the chains hit in a nearly year-long breach of their point-of-sale systems.

Customers at a series of Italian, sandwich, and film-themed restaurants have found their credit card numbers stolen after a cyberattack hit point-of-sale terminals at dozens of restaurants. Buca di Beppo, Earl of Sandwich, and Planet Hollywood restaurants, all owned by Earl Enterprises, suffered the attacks between May 23, 2018 and March 18, 2019.

KrebsOnSecurity alerted company officials to the breach after finding customer credit card numbers on underground shop Joker's Stash. After verifying the information, Earl Enterprises issued a statement saying that malware on the PoS devices captured payment card data, which could have included credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates and, in some cases, cardholder names.

Earl Enterprises has provided an online tool to tell customers which locations were breached.

Innocent transaction
Who knew an innocent over-the-counter payment transaction could become the platform that causes patrons to lose their sensitive data to attackers. Attackers always know where to target where nobody would anticipate. A simple leak process would give them all the access to countless sensitive info that would provide them with so much financial access.

Crisis Management
Kudos to one restaurant (Earl of Sandwich) for providing an on-line tool to advise if compromised - and let's see how honesty plays out there.  All too often a breach is detected a while ago but customers and all not immed advised (as did not happen here) and told the compromised data is NOT of significance (and here it is) so let's watch the honesty factor too.  Maybe restaurants, having more public face for transactions (they make money directly from the public and options exist to eat elsewhere) will be more open and forthcoming.  Unlike large firms who can hide behind vague income streams and investor relationships.  Restaurant is a cut-throat business.  More prone to be honest and resolve quickly.
