The US Office of Personnel Management's original count of 1.1 million people's fingerprints exposed in the massive data breach was way off: the agency today said it has since discovered in its investigation that a total of 5.6 million users' fingerprints were breached.

Even so, the total number of people affected by the breach remains the same, 21.5 million current and former federal employees and contractors as well as job candidates, the agency said today.

OPM maintains that "the ability to misuse fingerprint data is limited" but "this probability could change over time as technology evolves," according to a report by The Hill.
