ATLANTA -- Marshal’s Threat Research and Content Engineering (TRACE) Team today announced total spam volume is at its highest peak ever and has increased 280 percent since October last year. In addition, Marshal also today announced the availability of its TRACE 2006 report, which reviews the top spam, phishing, and malware trends in 2006. According to the TRACE Team, spam levels increased 30 percent in the past week, coinciding with a resurgence of spam coming out of China and South Korea.

“South Korea is in the lead as the most spam-producing country,” said Bradley Anstis, Director, Marshal Research and Product Development. “We’ve also seen Russia jump from 10th place to 5th place in one week’s time.”

The TRACE team also noted an increase in image spam as a percentage of email.

“Image spam normally accounts for 15 to 20 percent of all email but right now is accounting for more than 35 percent,” said Anstis.
