Google this week said it is adding new measures aimed at keeping Gmail safer: it will flag suspicious-looking emails and links to alert users. These security steps will be rolled out gradually and impact all Google Gmail users.

Gmail will generate an authentication alert on any message that cannot be verified with the standards of Sender Policy Framework or DomainKeys Identified Mail. A question mark in place of the sender’s profile photo/corporate logo will alert users to potential risks.

Google also will provide a warning in when a Gmail user receives a link to a suspicious-looking site known for malware activities or unwanted software. On clicking the link, a full-page warning will flash with the message “visiting this web site may harm your computer!” followed by instructions on safety measures.
