PRESS RELEASE

Chelmsford, MA, AUGUST 20, 2012 – Arbor Networks, Inc., a leading provider of network security and management solutions for enterprise and service provider networks, announced today that StarHub, Singapore's fully-integrated info-communication company, has joined Arbor’s Cloud Signaling Coalition (CSC). Preventing distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks and mitigating their threat requires collaboration among all stakeholders. The CSC is an innovative partnership between service providers, datacenter operators and enterprises with the mission to ensure the availability of their network infrastructure and speed time-to-mitigation for DDoS attacks. StarHub offers a full range of information, communications and entertainment services, and operates its own mobile, hybrid fiber-coaxial and fixed business networks. With extensive, business-critical traffic across its multiple networks, the company joined the CSC to be able to offer differentiated managed security services, and reduce the time-to-mitigation and increase the effectiveness of the DDoS threat response. “With the various networks we operate, any threats to traffic flow and network availability will have a significant impact to our customers’ businesses. That is a risk we cannot afford to take,” said StarHub’s Chief Technology Officer Mock Pak Lum. “Working closely with Arbor as a member of the CSC will help us protect our customers and earn their loyalty. Network security is an evolving challenge and a responsibility best fulfilled when shared by peers.”

“Managing threats to the network when handling such a high volume of traffic like StarHub is responsible for can be a daunting and risky business for any provider,” said Attley Ng, Arbor Networks vice president for Asia Pacific,. “By joining the coalition, StarHub is demonstrating its knowledge of the threat landscape and its commitment to partnering with customers to help ensure businesses are up and running and services are available.”

World Leader in DDoS Mitigation

Arbor Networks’ 450 customers include the vast majority of the world's service providers and many of the largest enterprise networks in use today. According to a recent report from Infonetics Research titled, DDoS Prevention Appliance Market Outlook, Arbor Networks was cited as top supplier of DDoS prevention solutions overall as well as in the Carrier, Enterprise, Government and Mobile market segments.

Arbor’s products are empowered with its ATLAS® Intelligence Feed, which looks for new threats and automatically delivers threat updates to customers. This insight is critical to security because botnets are constantly changing to thwart detection. Arbor’s ATLAS infrastructure combines a darknet sensor network with traffic data from more than 200 service provider customers around the world. The dataset enables Arbor to have a unique, globally-scoped view of malicious traffic traversing the Internet.

Cloud Signaling Functionality In Action

When an enterprise or data center operator discovers that he is under a service-disrupting DDoS attack, he can choose to mitigate the attack in the cloud through the Cloud Signaling system, simply by clicking on a drop down menu and triggering an alert to the service provider. The proactive approach enables him to stay in control and maintain expertise in command of the event. A volumetric DDoS attack congesting the upstream links would immediately diminish or disappear altogether from the data center’s access links, and service availability would be protected. Participation in the Cloud Signaling Coalition allows the service provider to provide differentiated managed security services, reduces the time to mitigation and increases the effectiveness of the response against DDoS threats, thus saving the customer from major operational expenses and helping to preserve their reputation. Enterprise and managed services customers also benefit from real time monitoring of the attack mitigation, as well as granular post mortem reports with details of the attack and the steps taken by the service provider to mitigate the attack, helping to establish best practices.

Cloud Signaling Functionality: A Faster, Automated Way to Prevent DDoS Attacks

At the heart of Cloud Signaling functionality are Arbor Networks’ Peakflow® SP and Pravail™ Availability Protection System (APS) solutions. Peakflow SP powers many of the world’s leading cloud-based DDoS managed security services, while Arbor’s Pravail APS is an on-premise device that protects the enterprise perimeter against threats to availability — specifically, protection against application-layer DDoS attacks.

Cloud Signaling functionality is an efficient and integrated way of bridging the enterprise data center to the service provider cloud. Cloud Signaling functionality connects the on-premise Pravail APS device with the cloud-based Peakflow SP solution. Arbor believes that the best way for enterprises and data center and cloud operators to have optimal protection against DDoS attacks is through this combination of on-premise and in-cloud protection.
